Can Iran defend itself?

The answer is yes, but not in the conventional sense. Set piece battles like Kursk are not going to happen by and large, not unless somebody screws up. What Iran can do; however, is deploy a wide range of assets which will make invasion a daunting prospect for any modern military. As the lessons of our current wars and the ones from the past few decades have taught us, you don't have to have Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems on your side to defend yourself and make the enemy bleed; to deprive them of the peace of mind that they need. This article by GlobalReseach appearing in Asia Times gives you a decent rundown of known Iranian capabilities. Asymmetric and guerrilla warfare upon initiation of hostilities.
